Then, Google – Alphabet, Now, Facebook – “?”, Plans Facebook

Tech giant Facebook is planning to go through a rebranding process with a new name. Just like in 2015, Google formed its Parent Company Alphabet to show it was more than just a search engine. Facebook is planning to rebrand its name to convey that it is much more than just a social media company.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly expected to announce a new name at the company’s Connect conference on October 28 but it could happen earlier too, The Verge reported.

It is expected that Facebook would be renamed as it serves the parent company to popular social media platforms like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

It is also parent to virtual reality headset producing company Oculus.

Many users still naturally relate Facebook to the Facebook app and this might also help the company to distinguish it from its different products.

The new name to Facebook is expected to align with its ambition to build metaverse. Recently they announced recruitment for a dedicated team of 10000 people to build metaverse within the European Union over the next five years.

Rebranding of name for Facebook indicates its big plans for the future. Mark Zuckerberg strongly believes in the idea of AR Glasses and expects to make them as common as smartphones today, in the future.

Zuckerberg told The Verge’s Reporter Casey Newton this summer “The metaverse is going to be a big focus, and I think that this is just going to be a big part of the next chapter for the way that the internet evolves after the mobile internet, and I think it’s going to be the next big chapter for our company too, really doubling down in this area.”

Though the concept of the metaverse is not yet widely understood and accepted, Facebook is heavily investing and promoting the idea of the metaverse.
