Indian testing agencies gave approval to four models of Palo Alto-based electric car company Tesla. From the previous few weeks test vehicles of some models like the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y were caught on the Indian roads.
Some reports suggest that these four models can be two variants of two cars, Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y. But till now no official reports published regarding the name of the models.
The government’s motor vehicle portal, Homologation Vahan Seva website says “The tests ensure that the vehicle matches the requirements of the Indian market in terms of emission and safety and road-worthiness as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules”
Earlier there were reports saying that the company has tied up with three Indian auto Industry Startups for various parts and components.
No doubt that Tesla is gearing up to launch its cars in Indian markets. Previously, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, tweeted on Twitter about setting up a manufacturing plant in India and launching vehicles in the country, “We want to do so, but import duties are the highest in the world by far of any large country!
Moreover, clean energy vehicles are treated the same as diesel or petrol, which does not seem entirely consistent with the climate goals of India.”
Obviously, every company wants to test the market before launching and investing a huge amount in setting up a manufacturing plant.
Many other companies have also criticized the Indian government for facing difficulties in doing business in India.
For an EV, If CIF (cost insurance and freight) value is more than $40,000 then Import duty on EVs in India is 100 percent but if it is lower than $40,000 then the value is 60 percent.
Previously in 2018, the government gave some relief to the manufacturers by mentioning that they can import and sell up to 2500 vehicles per year without the need for homologation in India.
